Subject:	Submittal of dpANS for Initial Public Review and Results of Compliance Review for ISO/IEC 14772-1:1997/FPDAM1, Information processing systems -- Computer graphics and image processing -- The Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) Part 1: Functional specification and UTF-8 encoding Amendment 1: enhanced interoperability

This proposed draft amendment is being processed simultaneously as an American National Standard and an International Standard. In accordance with the milestones, the following actions will be initiated by the NCITS Secretariat:

The draft has been reviewed by the NCITS Liaison to H3 and it has been determined to be in compliance with its authorizing project proposal.

There are no coordinating liaisons for this project.

The draft amendment will also be submitted to ANSI for announcement in Standards Action for a forty-five day public review. This draft will be announced for a public review to the NCITS community via a press release (http://www.ncits.org).

In accordance with the NCITS/SD-2, a call for possible patents (and other pertinent issues) is issued on this draft amendment. Please notify the NCITS Secretariat of any related issues as soon as possible.

Members are urged to submit their comments as early as possible in order for them to be considered in TC's formulation of the U.S. position. Comments received after the formulation of the U.S. position will be addressed and considered for future balloting (i.e. DIS ballot). Please copy the Secretariat on all correspondence.

The final version of the draft amendment will be attached with the NCITS letter ballot for final approval.

Scope from NCITS/SD-3:

The scope of the standard resulting from this work will incorporate the following:

-a mechanism for storing and transporting two-dimensional and three- dimensional data
-elements for representing two-dimensional and three-dimensional primitive information
-elements for defining characteristics of such primitives
-elements for viewing and modeling two-dimensional and three-dimensional information
-a container mechanism for incorporating data from other metafile formats
-mechanisms for defining new elements which extend the capabilities of the metafile to support additional types and forms of information

Scope of ISO/IEC 14772-1:1997/FPDAM1:

Amendment 1 to ISO/IEC 14772-1 adds to this file format modifications which allow greater interoperability among VRML implementations as well as enhanced interoperability with other related standards.
