INCITS Approves Fibre Channel - Simplified Configurations and Management Project

Washington, DC – February 14, 2006 – The InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS) has approved a new project proposal submitted by the INCITS Fibre Channel Interfaces (T11) Technical Committee. The project is titled “Information technology - Fibre Channel - Simplified Configurations and Management (FC-SCM)”, and the project number is 1824-DT.

The FC-SCM standard will recommend the development of a Fibre Channel profile oriented towards configurations requiring simple installation, management, and operation. Devices compliant to this profile will provide streamlined functionality, be interoperable by default, and require little or no management. The goal of this profile is to be more constraining than the FCMI-2 and FC-DA profiles.

The INCITS Fibre Channel Interfaces (T11) Technical Committee, which is chaired by Robert Snively of Brocade Communications, is responsible for standards development and maintenance in the areas of Fibre Channel (FC), Intelligent Peripheral Interface (IPI), and High-Performance Parallel Interface (HIPPI). Snively said of the approved proposal, "FC-SCM will extend the capabilities of the Fibre Channel interface across a far broader market, including small business and office environments." More information regarding the project can be found by visiting the technical committee’s web site: www.t11.org.

The approval of a project proposal is the first step in the INCITS process toward the development of an American National Standard. INCITS encourages membership in the Fibre Channel Interfaces (T11) Technical Committee, and is soliciting technical contributions to this
project. Membership in INCITS Technical Committees is open to all directly and materially affected parties that meet attendance, voting, and service fee requirements. Interested parties and technical experts interested in participating in the development work of this project should
contact Lynn Barra (LBarra@itic.org) at 202.626.5739 for more information. Information on the INCITS program of work and technical committees is also available on www.incits.org

INCITS adheres to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Patent Policy, and a call for patents and pertinent issues is issued now and throughout the development of the project to determine if a proposed standard may require the use of a patented invention. INCITS also encourages disclosure, where possible, of the existence of pending U.S. patent applications relating to the standard under development, and of any relevant unexpired foreign patents. Additional information on patent disclosure can be found at: http://www.incits.org/call.htm.
