NCITS announces the establishment a new TC to serve as
the US TAG to ISO/IEC/JTC 1/SC22 Java Study Group (JSG)

Washington D.C., March 1997 - NCITS established a new TC to serve as the US TAG to ISO/IEC/JTC 1/SC22 Java Study Group (JSG). This proposal was submitted by Scott Jameson, Digital Equipment Corporation and Head of Delegation to SC22, following discussion of the US participants at the January JSG meeting. Approximately 15 people, including representatives from companies such as Apple Computer, Digital Equipment, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Microsoft, and Sun Microsystems and others, were present. The group agreed it was desirable to initiate a US activity, based on the likelihood some elements of Java technology would be progressed in JTC 1. Following a brief discussion of potential SDOs which could host such as activity, the group unanimously agreed to seek the creation of a new Technical Committee in NCITS.

NCITS agreed that the establishment of a US TAG would be beneficial in coordinating US positions for the JSG, and defining the standards infrastructure to respond as events unfold. An NCITs TC is open to all materially affected parties. Initially, the focus is to monitor the SC22 activity and drive the US participation in the JSG. If Java-related projects come into being in SC22, as may occur as a result of the Sun application to become a PAS Submitter, this group will have responsibility for the US participation on those projects. Recognizing that Java could be bigger than the scope of SC22, interactions between this group and other appropriate US TAGs will be established as needed. The first meeting will be convened by Mr. Jameson (scott.jameson@ljo.dec.com) at ITI, 1250 Eye St NW - Suite 200, Washington DC 20005, on Wednesday, May 21, 1997, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Please RSVP to Deborah Donovan at ddonovan@itic.nw.dc.us by May 1, 1997, to ensure that the agenda and related documents can be distributed to participants prior to the meeting. Logistical information can be found at www.ncits.org.
