NCITS Approves Establishment of NCITS V3 - NCITs eCommerce

At a January 22-24 meeting in Harrisburg, PA, the National Committee for Information Technology Standards (NCITS) established a new technical committee, NCITS V3, eCommerce. The new TC was created to identify opportunities and requirements for worldwide infrastructure standards development. This will assist expansion of eCommerce for all types of transactions, and will complement work by W3C, IETF, The Open Group, and The Object Management Group.

Technical Committee V3's project is to identify opportunities and requirements for worldwide infrastructure standards development. This will assist expansion of eCommerce for all types of transactions. This project includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Freight movement
  • Traffic management
  • Entertainment
  • Financial instruments
  • Healthcare management
  • Distribution
  • Manufacturing


The project will proceed in the following manner.

  • Phase 1 - identification of requirements for further enabling eCommerce
  • Phase 2 - survey of current and emerging standards that address the requirements
  • Phase 3 - identification of current practices
  • Phase 4 - identification of opportunities
  • Phase 5 - completion and publication

Mr. John Hill of Sun Microsystems will convene the first meeting in Washington, DC, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on March 8, 2001. The 1-day meeting will be held at ITIC, 1250 I Street, NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC, 20005 in Conference Rooms 1 and 2.. Participation in standards activities of NCITS Subgroups is open to all directly and materially affected interests. NCITS operates under procedures approved by the American National Standards Institute.

NCITS's mission is to produce market-driven, voluntary consensus standards in the areas of:

  • multimedia (MPEG/JPEG),
  • intercommunication among computing devices and information systems (including the Information Infrastructure, SCSI-2 interfaces,
  • Geographic Information Systems),
  • storage media (hard drives, removable cartridges),
  • database (including SQL3),
  • security, and
  • programming languages (such as C++).

NCITS's membership is comprised of many IT-related companies such as Apple Computer, Compaq Computer, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Lucent Technologies, Microsoft, Sony, Sun Microsystems and Xerox Corporation. Many IT users such as Boeing, DOD, DOE and NIST also participate.
