The 2009 INCITS Awards Dinner was held April 20, 2009 at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando, Florida to recognize participants who have provided technical expertise and exhibited exceptional committee management while participating in standards development activities. 

 

Jim Hughes, Microsoft Corporation, received the INCITS Chairman's Award in recognition of his Chairmanship of the INCITS Procedures Board Committee (PBC) and leadership of U.S. efforts in harmonizing the JTC 1 Directives with the ISO and IEC Directives.

 

John Neumann, Open Strategies, was awarded the INCITS Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his more than 25 years of commitment, broad knowledge and long-term contributions, most recently with his leadership of INCITS/M1.5, Biometric Testing and Reporting.

 

Robert Snively, Brocade Communications, was posthumously awarded the INCITS Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of his career-long commitment to standards.  Bob's leadership skills exhibited in his role as the Chairman of INCITS/T11, Fibre Channel Interfaces, facilitated the efficient and effective progression of Fibre Channel standards nationally and internationally.

 

Robert Elliott, Hewlett-Packard Company, received the INCITS Service Award in recognition of his extensive technical contributions to INCITS/T10, SCSI Storage Interfaces.  Robert has been the long-time editor for the Serial Attached SCSI technology (SAS) standards.

 

Robert Kuffel, Northrop Grumman Corporation, was awarded the INCITS Service Award in recognition of his contributions in INCITS/L1, Geographic Information Systems (GIS).  Robert's technical input and dedicated efforts as Vice Chairman and Secretary of INCITS/L1 reflect his tremendous skills and commitment to standardization activities.

 

Daniel Benigni, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), was awarded the INCITS Gene Milligan Award for Effective Committee Management in acknowledgment of his leadership of INCITS/CS1, Cyber Security, where his knowledge and leadership skills have contributed to the smooth operation of the committee and its effectiveness in representing the U.S. interests in ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 27 (Security Techniques).

 

Fred Herr, ID Technology Partners, Inc., was a recipient of the INCITS Gene Milligan Award for Effective Committee Management in recognition of the leadership skills exhibited in his role as Chairman of INCITS/M1.2, Biometric Technical Interfaces and Profiles.  As a major technical contributor domestically and internationally in ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 37 (Biometrics), Fred's dedication and willingness to accept responsibilities have been instrumental to the success of his committee and to global standardization efforts.

 

Ed Stull, Direct Computer Resources (DCR), was selected to receive the INCITS Gene Milligan Award for Effective Committee Management in recognition of his role as the six-term Chairman for INCITS/T3, Open Distributed Processing (ODP), and his leadership skills that have contributed to the smooth operation of the committee and in achieving consensus among the committees' members.  Ed initiated and chaired the INCITS Study Group on Security Best Practices which raised the visibility of INCITS to the financial industry.

 

Brian Beech, Datacard Group, was a recipient of the INCITS Merit Award in honor of his leadership of INCITS/B10, ID Cards and Related Devices, and in acknowledgement of his dedicated efforts that have lead to the exceptional quality and timeliness of the standards developed by the committee.

 

P.J. Plauger, Dinkumware, Ltd., was awarded the INCITS Merit Award in recognition of his more than 20 years of participation and technical contributions, most notably in INCITS/PL22.11, Programming Language C, INCITS/PL22.16, Programming Language C++ and internationally within ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 22 (Programming Languages) and the SC 22 Working Groups. 

 

Felix Shvartsman, HID Global Corporation, was selected to receive the INCITS Merit Award in recognition of his more than 15 years of participation and contributions to INCITS/B10, ID Cards and Related Devices as well as his involvement in the corresponding international work of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 17 (Cards and Personal Identification).

 

Gerry Smith, ID Technology Partners, Inc., was awarded the INCITS Merit Award in recognition of his role as Project Editor of ISO/IEC 24727-1, Identification cards -- Integrated circuit card programming interfaces -- Part 1: Architecture, where his efforts helped achieve an International Standard in less than 3 years.

 

Jan-Eike Michels, IBM Corporation, was a recipient of the INCITS Award for Technical Excellence in recognition for his participation in INCITS/H2, Database, and his tremendous contributions to the technical content of the SQL 2003 and SQL 2008 standards.

 

Paul Suhler, Quantum Corporation, was selected to receive the INCITS Award for Technical Excellence in honor of his technical contributions to the SCSI Stream Commands (SSC) and Automation Device Interface (ADT, ADC) families of standards developed in INCITS/T10, SCSI Storage Interfaces.

 

Gregory Zektser, U.S. Department of Defense - BTF, was awarded the INCITS Award for Technical Excellence in recognition of his contributions toward conformance testing standards for biometric data interchange formats, fingerprint images, minutia and face and iris images.  Gregory's collaborative efforts were instrumental in the development of quality and timely standards by INCITS/M1, Biometrics, and internationally within ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 37 (Biometrics).

 

Gottfried Zimmermann, Access Technologies Group, was a recipient of the INCITS Award for Technical Excellence in recognition of his major technical contributions both domestically as the International Representative for INCITS/V2, Information Technology Access Interfaces and internationally as the Project Editor for the Universal Remote Console family of standards within ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 35 (User Interfaces).

 

Andrew Tescher, Microsoft Corporation, was awarded the INCITS Exceptional International Leadership Award in recognition of his contributions as the International Representative for INCITS/L3, Coding of Audio, Picture, Multimedia, and Hypermedia Information.  For more than 10 years, Andy has served as the U.S. Head of Delegation to ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29 (Coding of Audio, Picture, Multimedia, and Hypermedia Information) and has facilitated the development of MPEG and JPEG standards.

Nominations for the 2010 INCITS awards will be requested in the near future and will be due by February 19, 2010.  The award nominations can be emailed to Lynn Barra at lbarra@itic.org.
