Finance Report

Many of us would rather not have to worry about INCITS as a business – we just want to develop standards. But as an independent standards developing organization, INCITS must generate revenues that are sufficient to cover the cost of operations – the goal is to break even. The main sources of INCITS revenue are membership dues and publication sales. The economic downturn has made this a challenging year for many companies and individuals. And it’s a challenging year for INCITS - membership revenue is projected to be down 8% vs. the 2009 budget.

Also of concern – a significant number of members have been late in paying their dues. The INCITS policy is that membership fees are due 60 days after they are invoiced, and if the invoice is not paid after an additional 30 day notice, a cancellation notice will be sent and membership privileges are terminated. We recognize that the transition to ICMS has changed they way members receive their invoices, and that has caused some confusion. If any members are having trouble accessing their invoices or would like to discuss their payment plans, please contact Lynn Barra (

In light of the revenue shortfall, the INCITS organization has been working aggressively to trim expenses while maintaining the level of services and support that are required to successfully run the organization. Looking forward to 2010, we are preparing a budget that we think reflects the economic realities. Membership fees are unchanged in 2010, and we anticipate that some members will again have trouble funding their participation. But we are also hopeful that new areas of work that have been initiated in 2009 and which are planned for 2010 will attract new members. Standards in the IT sector are more important than ever for the US and global economies; INCITS and JTC 1 have important roles to play.

I’d like to thank all INCITS members for your support of the organization. Let us know if there is something we can do to help you continue your participation during these tough times.
