Submission of IEEE 802.1Q-2022, IEEE Standard for Local and metropolitan area networks

INCITS/Networks recently approved the progression of a new standard in ISO/SC 6 for IEEE 802.1Q-2022, IEEE Standard for Local and metropolitan area networks - Bridges and Bridged Networks. This standard will specify how Media Access Control (MAC) Service is supported by Bridged Networks, the principles of operation of those networks, and the operation of MAC Bridges and VLAN Bridges, including management, protocols, and algorithms.

This technology allows the compatible interconnection of information technology equipment attached to separate individual LANs and will specify Bridges that interconnect individual LANs, each supporting the IEEE 802 MAC Service using a different or identical media access control method, to provide Bridged Networks and VLANs.

This standard will address both local area network (LAN), collection of devices connected in one physical location, such as a building, office, or home and metropolitan area network (MAN), a computer network that connects computers within a metropolitan area, which could be a single large city, multiple cities and towns, or any given large area with multiple buildings.

INCITS/Networks, the U.S. mirror committee to international subcommittee SC 6, is responsible for the technical development of Reference Model on Open Distributed Processing (ODP), plus standards development of certain constituent parts of distributed processing, including the ASN.1, Directory Services and OSI System Management families of International Standards.
In addition, INCITS/Networks is responsible for standards development for the Network, Transport, Data Link and Physical communication layers, including Near Field Communication (NFC).
