ATA Command Set - 6 (ACS-6) in Development

The INCITS/ATA Storage Interfaces Technical Committee (aka T13) has in development the next generation of the ATA Command Set standard, ATA Command Set - 6 (ACS-6), INCITS 574-202x.

The AT Attachment command set is used to communicate between host systems and storage devices. This provides a common command set for systems manufacturers, system integrators, software suppliers, and suppliers of storage devices.

This new national standard for ACS-6 proposes to address the command set implemented by devices that support the ATA architecture and address new features that were not sufficiently developed for ACS-5, INCITS 558-2021.

The proposed enhancements for ACS-6 are considered essential for the continued growth of the storage market and to the expansion into the cloud storage segment, and it is anticipated that the approved national standard will have a useful life of over ten years.

Some new features in ACS-6 include:

- Updates Command Duration Limits Device Statistics to support multiple actuators
- Adds a new command WRITE GATHERED EXT
- Adds a log to describe model numbers associated with various capacities
- Adds capability to LBA Status log to report ranges of LBAs that have become read only or offline
- Adds a maximum number of elements eligible for depopulation
- Adds host selectable formatting or not formatting after depopulation
- Obsolete SMR Host Aware
